Veterinarian Health care Jillian Hartwig 5th Hour 2/7/14
Introduction • “Animals are such agreeable friends - they ask no questions, they pass no criticisms.”~George Eliot. In order to get a better understanding of my chosen career field of a Veterinarian, I will be researching nature of work, working condition, training/qualifications/advancement, job outlook/employment, and earnings. I want to be a Vet because I really want to help the animals, I understand I will have to put them down or do surgery, but its to help them get out of pain and stop suffering.
Nature of Work • Examine animals to diagnose their health problems • Diagnose and treat animals for medical conditions • Treat and dress wounds • Perform surgery on animals • Test for and vaccinate against diseases
Working Conditions • Often long hours, some work nights or weekends. • Both indoor and outdoor, sometimes you need to leave the office to go treat an animal • Also, both mental and physical, you have to work on the animal and prescribed them medicine
Training, Qualification, Advancement • 3 years of classroom, laboratory, and clinical work • 1-year internship • Need to have compassion, decision-making skills, interpersonal skills, management skills, manual dexterity, and problem-solving skills
Job Outlook/Employment • 12% growth from 2012 to 2022 • Work rate is growing • Greater competition • Work at a place with both farm and pet animals • South Carolina would be a good place
Earnings • $84,460 median pay Goals: • Time Square for New Years + $1,000-$3,000 • Visit Paris+ $3,000-$5,000 • Las Vegas+ $5,000
Related Occupation • Be a dental assistant • $34,500 median wage, $16.59 an hour • Take classes of biology, chemistry and anatomy • Work with patients to make them comfortable in the dental chair and to prepare them for treatments and procedures
Summary • I am really interested in this career. The pay is good enough for me. I get to be with and work on animals to make them better. I really wont enjoy the surgeries. I know its to get the animal better, but I'm just worried I will get grossed out and not do it anymore.
