  1. The Roadblocks Toward Full Decolonization Puerto Rico’s level of self-government and freedom is very limited since the United States has not recognized Puerto Rican’s right of self-determination Puerto Ricans voted in favor of Law 600 in 1950; U.S. claims that by favoring this law Puerto Ricans exerted self-determination but this has been regarded as untrue Puerto Rico experiences extraordinary levels of dependence on the United States on economic and social arenas; this makes any process of self-determination difficult Legislative initiatives for national self- determination were not seriously examined and generated false expectations that the issue would be soon addressed Another roadblock is long-term official suppression of the Independence movement
