Challenges with Teenage Pregnancy • Steadily increasing over the years • Mostly unplanned • Physically, emotionally and economically unprepared • Endanger the health of the mother • Endanger the health of the baby • High risk for single parenting • High risk of substance abuse (smoking, alcohol, drugs) • Babies born to teenagers are at risk for neglect and abuse • Higher subsequent fertility • Lower employment opportunities • Family conflict

  3. Risk Factors • Poverty • Low educational attainment/ poor school performance • Lack of access to birth control methods • Growing up in a single parent household • Having a mother who was an adolescent mother • Having a sister who has become pregnant

Parents and family members may experience shock, disappointment, anxiety, anger and sometimes a sense of guilt or responsibility. • There may be a loss of their dreams for their daughter/son • Additional economic stress • Changes of roles in the family • There may be concerns about what friends and other family members think. • They may also get a great deal of pleasure from their new grandchild!
