Stakeholder Engagement • Some staff moved straight to the front of the train and wanted to learn to drive; • Some waited patiently at the stations up ahead; • Some stayed in the carriages in 2nd or 3rd class; • … and some got left on the platform.
The change journey • Creating awareness and interest among the passengers on the train was not difficult to achieve; BUT • No-one really knew where the destination was; and • We didn’t know how good the quality of the track ahead was; and • It was not always clear whether the train had the full support of the stakeholders who owned the track and controlled the signals.
The fundamental problem Ran in a different direction, was of a different gauge, and did not join up with … The track that supported the development and approval of new programmes … the track that supported a programme’s operation
The Journey STOP
Travelogue – the lessons learned • The journey can be more interesting than the end point; • You must be prepared to end up at a different destination; • Make sure all of the technology talks to the other bits; • Do not underestimate the complexity and the sheer volume of components that you need to help ensure that the train works and keeps on track; • Keep the train companies, the track providers, and all of the different system engineers with you (i.e. don’t ‘privatise’ the railways); • Enjoy the ride!
And as for me … I now travel by bike
