  2. Who was he? • He was a great man who fought for black people to have the same rights as white people. • Can you name him?

  3. He was born on the 18th July 1918 • Nelson Mandela was only 9 when his father died • Nelson Mandela grew up in a village in south Africa called Qunu

Quick facts • Nelson Mandela fought for black people to have the same opportunities as white people in South Africa • He was imprisoned on Robin Island for protesting for his skin colour • Nelson Mandela was president of south Africa from 1991-1997 • Nelson Mandela died on the 5th of December 2013

  5. His life in prison • He went to prison in 1962 • Nelson Mandela was in prison for 27 years for protesting for equal rights • While in prison he was made to work breaking lime stone with big heavy axes

  6. Mandela is Free! • In 1980, the Free Mandela campaign began. • On 11th February 1990 Nelson Mandela was released from Victor Verster Prison
