What is a management information system? • A system that inputs raw data, processes the data into information that is stored and is distributed to management for decision making
Some examples of MIS systems • Customer Relationship Management – CRM • Inventory Management • Medical facility management
Enterprise Information System • An information system based on a suite of integrated information systems that share a common database • Data from different departments are combined into the common database • When data is entered by one process, the data is immediately available to other business processes
Role of MIS in GM Recall • Was GM information systems tracking accidents involving their vehicles? • Was the system able to relate accidents to specific issues with specific vehicles? • Was the system designed to flag fatalities and report these to appropriate management? • Was the system designed to cover up accidents related to defects in their vehicles?
Role of MIS Continues • Did the programmers knowingly participate in building software that might cover up such details? • Was an enterprise information system being used? • Did the legal side of GM inform other areas of the company (engineering, management) in a timely manner?
