Personal and Physical qualities. Aims of the lesson. Pupils will learn the difference between personal and physical qualities. Pupils will understand how these can benefit a sports performer and how it may determine the choice of activity and role they play.

Aims of the lesson • Pupils will learn the difference between personal and physical qualities. • Pupils will understand how these can benefit a sports performer and how it may determine the choice of activity and role they play. • Pupils will use this information to help answer an exam type question and relate it to their own experience.
Physical Qualities • To fulfil a particular role in an activity, we require different qualities. • Physical qualities can dictate the role we take. • For example:- • A goal-shooter in netball needs height. • A prop forward in rugby needs strength. • To perform successfully in gymnastics you need flexibility. • Many sports require a level of skill.
Physical qualities • Height Your height might dictate the activity or role you play. Eg. Being tall would benefit a goal shooter, goal keeper, high jumper, basketball player. Being smalland light – would help work in a jockey’s favour.
Physical qualities • Strength – having good strength would help rugby players, weight lifters, gymnasts etc.
Physical Qualities • Speed – having speed would help sprinters, footballers, long jumpers etc
Physical qualities • Flexibility – would help gymnasts, dancers, swimmers, hurdlers etc.
Personal qualities • Personal qualities may also have an affect on the roles we take. They relate to our character and how we treat other people.
For example:- • Team members need to be able to co-operate with others. • A referee needs to be able to concentrate to focus on particular incidents. • A coach or captain, who is organising and making decisions during a game, needs leadership skills. • No one can do anything well unless they're motivated and set targets.
