I can describe the effect of mountains on Greek life. • Mountains made transportation difficult. • It was hard to unite Greece under one government. • Only 20 – 30% of land was good for farming. • Most farmland was located in the valleys. • Men were the main land owners. • Landowners were part of the upper class.
2.) I can explain how the sea unified Greece and brought new ideas. • The seas linked most of Greece to each other. • They used the seas as transportation routes for trading and military conquests. • This brought new ideas to the Greek city-states.
3.) I can summarize the beginnings of Greek culture. • It evolved over 1000s of years starting around 2000 BC. • The 1st Greek civilization was Mycenaean Greece. It collapsed around 1200BC. There were no written records until about 750BC. • The Greeks started using the Phoenician alphabet with some changes. Our alphabet today is based on this alphabet. • The Greeks also learned about coins from trading and they developed new forms of literature and government.
