What is EUREKA? • EUREKA: a public network with nearly 30 years experience in supporting R&D-performing businesses. • Market-oriented - products, processes or services for civilian use. • Bottom-up: The consortium decides. There is no thematic restriction. • Financed using national and regional public and private money. SMEs and internationalization • SMEs are the European growth engine: • More than 99% of all companies being either small or medium-sized • 85% of all jobs created over the last years are in SMEs •  Benefits of internationalisation: • Internationalised SMEs create more jobs • Internationalised SMEs are more innovative • Internationalised SMEs are more competitive The EUREKA Network supports SMEs with specific funding instruments

  6. EUREKA Individual projects • Small, shorter-term projects • Result in a product, process or service with a significant advance in their sector • ~4 participants • Typically SME lead • 33 month average duration • 1.7 M€

  7. EUREKA Cluster projects • Medium-term, strategically-significant initiatives • Develop generic technologies of key importance to European competitiveness • ~20 participants • Large Company can lead • 40 month average duration • 20 M€

The Eurostars Programme • A joint EUREKA-EU funding programme running 2008-2013 and continued under Horizon 2020 • National funding support in 33 countries, all agreeing to common rules • Projects led by high-growth, Innovative SMEs • Simple and fast application • 1.15 Billion Euro of public support available between 2014-2020 • Close to market innovation without thematic restriction; market access within 5 years of funding decision.

The Eurostars Programme under Horizon 2020 Eurostars Eurostars ‘2’ • Over 3500 projects submitted… • 783 projects funded (1.1 Bn€ total value) • 79% of participants are SMEs • Annual approval rate of 20-25% • Fast processes compared to equivalent programmes (less than 10 months from application to funding received) • *R&D definition widened • Even faster time to contract • More standardisation • Remove duplication • Fast and simple • Reduce bureaucracy • Partnership with third countries • South Korea, Canada • 33 countries involved • R&D performing SME lead • 2008 - 2013 • 400 M€ • 33 countries involved + third countries • R&D performing SME* lead • 2014 – 2020 • Budget is tripled to 1.15 Billion €

Eligibility criteria • Consortium Leader is an R&D-performing SME • Target group • At least 2 participants from 2 different Eurostars members • International project • Project duration is less than 3 years • Market driven • Market introduction is foreseen within 2 years after project completion • Direct impact on the company turnover • The R&D performing SMEs are undertaking at least 50% of total R&D cost (excluding sub-contracting) • SME driven projects • Well balanced partnership (no country responsible for more than 75% of the project costs) • Effective partner cooperation • No restriction on thematic area (bottom up) • Answer future needs

Eurostars Projects • An international evaluation based on 3 major criteria: • Project planning and consortium quality • Level of technology and innovation of product, process or service • Market access and competitiveness • Assessment by 3 experts • Financial Viability check • Scoring & Ranking by an Independent Panel • 3to4participants,2to3countries involved • R&D performing SME lead • 29month average duration • 1.4M€

EUREKA SUCCESS STORY Injection System for Transderm Administration of drugs Design, test and validate on human skin a needle free drug delivery injector with the advantages: easy to use, safe, efficient in terms of injection, no contamination, no fear from needle. The growing market of new drugs like biologics is targeted. Country Focus - Eurostars INSIDER Eurostars backed high-tech firm helps taxi drivers As the trend for geo-location applications is rapidly expanding, Correlation Systems developed RAE is a device which adapts the principle of data-mining to GPS and helps taxi companies to work more efficiently. The additional turnover expected in two years is of 10 million euros. 8 new jobs were created in the company during the course of the project. Country Focus - EUREKA Cluster The Future of airport passport control Digital security specialists, major European electronics makers, and experts in biometrics worked together to make passport control at airports faster. The technology also could have broader applications on the way our identity documents are design and on the way we access public services.
