9-6-12 Objectives: • I will present my poster with my group. • I will take a quiz to show I understand safety in the science classroom.
SAFETY IN THE SCIENCE LABORATORY Mrs. Guerra Science
General Guidelines • Conduct yourself in a responsible manner;
Read instructions before starting experiments; • Follow all directions carefully
Perform only those experiments authorized by the instructor;
NO HORSEPLAY IN LAB! • Absolutely no horseplay in the lab!
Keep work areas clean and tidy; • Keep aisles clear;
Know the locations and operating procedures of all safety equipment • Safety shower
Dispose of all chemical waste properly, according to instructions; • Clean equipment and work area after use; • Return all materials to proper location
Keep hands away from face, eyes and mouth while using chemicals; • Wash hands thoroughly before leaving lab;
Dress properly during a lab; • Tie long hair back • No dangling jewelry • No loose, baggy clothing
No sandals (shoes should completely cover top of foot) • Wear lab aprons • No contact lenses
Report any accident or injury to the instructor immediately;
If a chemical splashes on your skin, immediately flush with running water and notify instructor
When checking a chemical for odors, gently waft vapors towards nose; NO YES
Double check labels on chemical bottles • Take only as much chemical as you need; • Never return unused chemicals to their original containers;
When diluting acids always add the acid to the water; • “Do as you oughta – add acid to water”
Never handle broken glass with your bare hands; • Use a dust pan and brush • Place broken glass in glass disposal container
Never use chipped, cracked or dirty glassware; • Never leave a lit burner unattended; • When heating a substance in a test tube, never point the mouth of the test tube at yourself or others;
Never look down into a container that is being heated; • Be careful – hot glass doesn’t look hot!
Never pipet by mouth! • NO! • YES!
