Intel NUC Computers: The Next Generation Portable Desktop Computers
Introduction • Desktop computers and the word ‘portability’ is an unlikely combination, but thanks to recent developments in the computing world, they can be safely put together. • Intel debuted their NUC line of computers that changed the way we look at desktop computers by bringing in the highly coveted portability factor. • Desktop computers are big and bulky, and decent laptops that offer the same performance as desktops are often expensive, so a middle ground was needed. • That is where Intel’s NUC line comes in: By offering desktop level performance and laptop level portability at affordable costs.
What is Intel NUC? • NUC stands for Next Unit of Computing, an acronym Intel used to show the revamped desktop computer that packs a full-fledged CPU in a small, portable box. • Just like assembled computers, NUC computers are highly customizable, allowing users to customize all the essential hardware of their NUC unit without any restrictions. • Intel also sells pre-configured NUC units such as Intel NUC Canyon, which is a high performance computer for professionals, and Intel NUC Skull Canyon, a customized gaming computer for gamers.
Additional Components for NUC • Although NUC is marketed as a full-fledged computer, they are just CPU units, and you need to attach additional components to be able to actually make full use of the NUC unit. • You will need a computer monitor for display needs, a keyboard and a mouse. These three are absolutely needed if you want to do even the basic of tasks such as viewing photos or watching videos. • NUC has many connectivity options for other hardware such as speakers, Ethernet ports for internet and USB ports for connecting hard drives and accessories. • Different models of NUC come with different connectivity options. For example, the Canyon models come with additional connectivity ports such as HDMI ports.
Components of NUC • NUC boxes contain all the essential components that are required to run a computer internally. • They contain a suitable processor depending on your configuration and model, RAM modules, motherboard, hard disk drives, graphic cards for gaming NUCs, Wi-Fi cards and operating system. • They are basically a plug-and-play computer, so that you can easily carry your NUC unit from one place to another in a small bag and plug in a monitor, mouse and keyboard to run your computer.
NUC Generations and Advantages • 8 generations of Intel NUC have been out since the first every NUC was debuted by Intel in 2012. • The very first NUCs contained only a motherboard and processor; basically everything else was needed to be bought separately. • Current generation NUCs cover all the basics, and a fully kitted up NUC can cost as much as a high end laptop but with more raw power minus the display and input devices. • NUC’s main advantage is its portability; you can carry one anywhere in your bag easily. • Another advantage is that they are a favorite of DIY enthusiasts, who are keen to build a custom PC for specific purposes because of NUC’s modding ability.
