On Domains and Paradigms • Domains: Commonly understood realms or modes of reality • Nature/natural • Technology/technological • Social • Sacred/Spiritual • Paradigm: Asystem of concepts, practices, and governing principles that constitutes a way of viewing and responding to reality. • Natural Science • Sociology • Religion
There are at least two ways to consider the ordering of the domains. The first foregoes ordering and considers a subject as being part of all the domains. The second establishes a priority. The paradigms tend to follow the second strategy.
Science Prioritization Natural and technological processes are deemed central and are used to explain the social and religious
Religion Prioritization The sacred/divine is deemed central and is used to explain nature, technology and social life.
Sociology Prioritization Social structures and culture are deemed central and are used to explain religion, accounts of nature, and technology
A subject will be explained differently according to each paradigm.
However, in this course we will include all three paradigms and we should have opportunities to consider a subject in terms of all of the domains.
