  1. AFC Module MeetingFriday - May 21, 2004 Report on the Window burst test Edgar Black IIT

  2. MTA Absorber Design Progress • This windows are of a nominal 21cm diameter • The diameter was selected to fit on the forced flow absorber inside the 40cm. diameter magnet bore (lab G magnet) • The design called for 25psi MOP and rupture up to 100psi • The bellow type new configuration was aimed to achieve a minimum of 105 micron thickness at the center • Data from the burst test on this window will be used to verify the window design parameters for MICE

  3. Fabricated window design details

  4. Window profile parameters

  5. Manifold construction detail

  6. Back plate for pressure test

  7. 8. Measurements results • Photogrametry technique give the minimum thickness to be 190 microns • Gauged thickness on the burst window material at the center measured 101 microns • The above measurements included 15 micron total of the material (spray paint) coating both sides of the window • Donald Summers reported a central thickness of 117 microns (no paint)

  9. Burst test • No fatal events as predicted, a safety analysis was submitted before the test for approval • Pressure was apply to the window/plate volume on increments of 5psig • A leak developed over the elastomer gasket at 133psig • Changed the gasket 2.5mm instead of .8mm diameter plus vacuum grease • Repeated test, burs pressure at 144psig
