  2. Where did the French settle • Mississippi River to St. Lawrence Sea Way (Quebec).

  3. Social characteristics • Religion: Roman Catholic; • Converted natives without force • Society: not dependent on slaves due to geography. • Intermarried with the natives • Influenced by migration pattern

  4. Economic and political characteristics • Political: Authoritarian; • Act of authorizing something • Control = King. • Economic: fur trapping, trading & exports; • Dependent on natives for commerce • The need for hunting grounds brought them into conflict with the English. • Why did the French go in this direction instead of stable crops?

English colonies • Motivationally geographically, economically, politically & socially diverse. • Settled from the East coast, from the Atlantic Ocean to the Appalachian Mountains. • Planned on staying long term. • Jamestown, VA – 1st permanent English settlement founded by a joint – stock company (1606) • Colony owned by a group of investors. (VA Company).

VA Company And John Smith • Had its charter revoked and became a royal colony; • A colony under the direct control of the king through an appointed royal governor • Colonial assemblies had control of the purse and used it to control the impact of the royal governors. • John Smith: was dismayed that nearly all of the settlers were consumed by the through of finding gold. • Many would die due cold winters, disease & starvation • Aided by the Native Americans and later would prosper by growing tobacco. (Staple Crop).

  7. Powhatans • Alarmed by the # of settlers; killed livestock & destroyed farms; • Due to starvation Jamestown went from 600 to 60 colonists.

  8. Head Right System • The VA Company was trying to attract more colonist to America because they needed help in growing tobacco • Offered them 50 acres of land to each settler and family members who accompanied him. • Indentured Servants: people who were forced to work for a certain period of time (usually 7 yrs) in return for their paid passage to North America.
