Imbibition Experiment Performed on Universal HD 300 scanner
Experiment Set Up • 1” diameter Berea SS core • cut ~ perpendicular to bedding • Placed in plastic cup on wood block • Tube contains NaI solution
Imbibition Stage • After dry scan, NaI solution was added around bottom of sample. • After a few minutes the sample was rescanned. • After another delay and second rescan was performed.
Scanning Technique • Excitation Voltage: 120 kV • Tube Current: 7mA • FOR=FOV: 235.5mm • xy pixel dimensions: o.49 x 0.49mm • Slice Thickness: 0.625mm • Reconstruction Kernel: bone (very sharp)
Three Stages • Imbibed fluid brightens the sample • Imbibition front parallels bedding planes • Note that puddle at bottom shrinks between first and second stages. Dry Image Second Imbibition Image First Imbibition Image
Subtracted Images • Subtracting the dry image from the two imbibition images emphasizes the changes • With volume calibration, these data can be used to map saturation in the sample. Front Source
Front Advance between Stages • Subtraction of first Imbibition stage from second Imbibition stage • Front advances ~ ¾ in. • Source puddle size shrinks. • Note slight saturation increase behind front.
