Types of sentences. Simple Sentence. (As many phrases as you want +) One independent clause ( + as many phrases as you want!). (IC) Example: The Heat and the Mavericks reached the NBA finals. Example: In July of this year, Japan won the Women’s World Cup.

  2. Simple Sentence • (As many phrases as you want +) One independent clause ( + as many phrases as you want!). (IC) • Example: The Heat and the Mavericksreached the NBA finals. • Example: In July of this year, Japan won the Women’s World Cup. • Example: Unfortunately, Mr. Wyatt’s students smell a little strange today.

  3. Compound Sentence • Two independent clauses. (IC + IC) • United by a comma and a coordinating conjunction Or by a semi-colon. • Example: My cousin wants to rent Step Brothers, but I want to see Elf. • Example: Every year my family takes a trip during the summer; this year we’re going to Munich. • Example: I believe that aliens are already among us; however, Wrenne F. believes that I’m crazy.

  4. Complex Sentence • One independent clause and one dependent clause. (IC + DC or DC + IC) • United by a subordinate conjunction. Only use a comma when the DC comes first. • When the DC comes first, the SC is at the beginning of the sentence.

  5. Complex Sentence Examples • Example: While Kayleesprays the tables, Jamesonwill begin sweeping. • Example: Jamesonwill begin sweeping while Kayleesprays the tables. • Example: Because Mr. Wyatt doesn’t have air-conditioning in his car, he hates to drive in the summer. • Example: Mr. Windhamisn’t hungry for lunch because he ate sixteen wafflesfor breakfast.

  6. Compound-Complex Sentence • Usually a dependent clause followed by two independent clauses. (DC + IC + IC) • Example: While Rachel scrambles the eggs, Allisonwill cook the bacon, and Andrewwill brew coffee. • Example:

Journal: Sentence Types • TOPIC: Describe an accomplishment that you’re very proud of (e.g. winning a sports match; getting a good grade on a test; helping someone; volunteering; earning money; beating a tough level on a video game). • Use the following sentence types and underline them in the following colors: • 2 simple sentences in red • 2 compound sentences in blue • 2 complex sentences in green • 1 compound-complex sentence in purple.
