SYNOPSIS • Most of the researches have shown that intimate partner violence is always the highest. • Human beings are sexual beings and we have made it a taboo to talk about issues around it. • It is a reality that GBV impacts more women and Girls • Collaboration is the key to addressing GBV, including utilising each others strengthens and weakness • GBV needs a holistic approach, the need to provide a solution to the main problem 50/50 BY 2015: DEMANDING A STRONG POST 2015 AGENDA

OBJECTIVES • To raise awareness on GBV and sexual reproductive health • To help women living with HIV identify their position and understand how GBV and SRH impacts on them. • Give GBV and SRH a face and a voice • Documenting the experiences of violence by women • Training/Empowering women on SRHR 50/50 BY 2015: DEMANDING A STRONG POST 2015 AGENDA

BACKGROUND • Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights as the solution to HIV/AIDS • The activity was prompted by high GBV on women in Botswana which is reported at 67 % • SRH deals with Sexually transmitted diseases and HIV itself is an STI • GBV is infringement to individual rights, and any attempt or to link GBV and SRH will be the right approach • To raise awareness ,reduce GBV and show linkages with SRH 50/50 BY 2015: DEMANDING A STRONG POST 2015 AGENDA

KEY ACTIVITIES • Training on Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights, and ASRHR • Botswana validation workshop report and a legal review on violence against women living with HIV/AIDS • GBV match to raise awareness • Women taking part during the 16 days of activism through cyber talks, media interviews 50/50 BY 2015: DEMANDING A STRONG POST 2015 AGENDA

  6. KEY ACTIVITIES CONT’S • Women were part of producing the ‘I’stories Botswana • BIA has been working with the Police and Magistrates courts to assist women to report cases and cases to be tried in court

CHALLENGES • People do not easily open up to discuss acts of sex • Lack of support system for service providers as they are also human beings • Ignorance of understanding women issues • Most of the intervention tools are in English not local languages 50/50 BY 2015: DEMANDING A STRONG POST 2015 AGENDA

  10. CHALLENGES • Language of SRH is can viewed as insultive • Most women are economically depended on men

  13. RESULTS • More women are opening up and sharing stories’ “I stories Botswana” • Increased referrals to the office, other partners by survivors of GBV • DVD of women sharing their stories • Champions of SRHR as evident by number of invitations to other departments

CAPACITY BUILDING/ WOMEN EMPOWERMENT • SRHR training in Kgalagadi area( Tsabong, Kisa, Omaweneno, Werda and Gantsi) • SRHR trainings in Boteti area ( letlhakane, Mopipi, Xhumo, Rakops, Khumaga and Xere). • Botswana validation workshop which was in Lobatse • GBV and Transgender workshop • Needs assessment workshop(Lobatse, Kanye, Gathwane, and Malokaganyane)

CHANGES AT THE WORKPLACE • An address on effects of tobacco in relation to SRHR during the World Tobacco Day (Buildings Department Lobatse). • Addressing Geological Surveys employees during their Wellness Day on how to achieve zero discrimination, zero new infections • Addressing tribal administration employees on issues of SRHR and nutrition on their Wellness Day. • Addressing Lobatse Police on GBV • Addressing CIC church members

MEDIA OUTREACH • We had interviews with different Media houses including Rb1,Yarona Fm, Duma Fm and the Botswana Daily News. • Publications: Launch for the ‘I’ Stories voices from Botswana • Production of a DVD on issues of Stigma and Discrimination, GBV and Defilement (Stories from Ratholo and Tumasera)

LESSON LEARNED AND INNOVATION • We have learnt how widespread, how prevalent and how concealed/overt the incidences of GBV, STI’s and other women issues are. • In most instances cases problems are only discovered when children have long suffered from defilement and have fallen pregnant, when children are found to be infected with STI’s on normal clinic visits. 50/50 BY 2015: DEMANDING A STRONG POST 2015 AGENDA

  24. LESSON LEARNED AND INNOVATION • Face and Voice are the key to advocacy • Sharing of experiences is more effective • Feedback and responses on either positive or negatives are essential improvement • Success and failure to reduce GBV depends on community involvement and commitment

LEARNING AND SHARING WITH PARTNERS • We have learned that our success is dependent on collaboration with others • We are sharing our stories and experiences, and using them as an entry point to all the cases that we handle • We have changed the language, by being truthful in calling and naming issues without compromising 50/50 BY 2015: DEMANDING A STRONG POST 2015 AGENDA

SUSTAINABILITY AND REPLICATION • All our efforts are Community Driven and Owned • We have achieved this through strong partnerships by sharing resources • We have positioned ourselves as SRHR champions by having a voice and a face in everything we do • We planning on starting ‘Poultry project’ 50/50 BY 2015: DEMANDING A STRONG POST 2015 AGENDA

KEY PRIORITIES FOR 2014 • Producing Community Advocacy Toolkit and Curriculum that will address both GBV and SRHR • We will be implementing a project which will address GVB/HIV targetting 10 000 women and girls through IDCC clinics • Indirectly we will reach about 3 000 men through the same program 50/50 BY 2015: DEMANDING A STRONG POST 2015 AGENDA

  28. KEY PRIORITIES FOR 2014 • Addressing STIs in adolescence by targeting intergenerational sex • Will have a walk/match to raise awareness of STIs and intergenerational sex • To build strong relationships /strong partnerships so as to achieve our mandate
