Show Me the Money! Where are the Grants??
Web Resources • Fastweb.com • Community of Science • Google often! • Key words: foundation, grant, fund, scholarship, fellowship
Keep a Record • List funding sources & deadlines • Make new list each yr & update • Put future grants on list • Check your deadlines often!
Process • Have a 2 pg updated proposal at all times • Cut & paste from prospectus & edit to tailor to grant • Focus on what the organization’s goals are and the evaluation criteria—tweak accordingly • Follow up to make sure recommendations are sent, applications received • Make sure to remember to send changes of address
Proposal • Focus on goals of grant • Hammer home significance • Describe methods as appropriate to audience (get specific w/ the science agencies! Include how your data analyses answer your questions) • Be on time • Read instructions carefully • Ask recommenders for letters in advance • Have a budget prepared—tweak as needed
The Big $$ • NSF grants mainly go thru advisor but can be done! Email them to figure out your cluster. These are long proposals—start early • NIH grants likely work similar to NSF • Foundations—if you qualify (PSU is a non-profit by the way), foundations have lots of $$ • Organizations can sometimes have big $$ (e.g. PADI); look up orgs that are related to your field—join too if you want—affiliations never hurt • Collaborators—look for people you could work with and ride on their $$ • Specialty/Memorial grants—web search for your nook • Ask your peers & professors—keep them updated on your research
