  1. The story about what came after the Teaching Repository and how our 4 valiant heroes overcame the odds to get funding for a Research Repository while trying to do their regular jobs and occasionally having coffee and buns. A Research Repository for Keele

  2. Symplectic • RES gets Symplectic to handle Research submission to HEFCE • Research management database developed at Imperial • Harvests online data and Keeps metadata on research publications

  4. Nipping it in the bud

  5. Our Four Heroes promised: • A research repository, • with a website front end for searching (and hopefully browsing), • optimized for search engines (we already know how to do this)

  6. In return, the Grant would pay for: • Contract with Intrallect to produce a connection to Symplectic • 10 days consultancy with Intrallect (in case something went wrong) • Post funded to promote the research repository

  7. The Specification • Dataflow driven by Symplectic • Added Import to intraLibrary button • Software fetches paper from the web and deposits in intraLibrary with all its metadata • Heritage import of existing publications

  8. Opensearch • A website to search repository collections • Open source project • You need a PHP-enabled webserver • A few extra PHP modules • My soon-to-be-written notes on how to re-brand the website

  9. Re-branding • Strings file – customize messages to the user • Images and Style sheets • Terms and Conditions • Local keywords for auto-suggestion

  10. Disaster Strikes! • Budget cuts • Hiring freeze • No post for research repository • :-(

  11. A Ray of Hope • Symplectic have submitted a bid to JISC on promoting research repositories to staff • Joint with Keele and two other institutions using other repositories (Dspace, ePrints) • Will this provide the drive to get things moving?

  12. Building block for BlackBoard 9 • Want to replace connection to repository we have in WebCT, so we can upgrade VLE to BB9 • Use the consultancy money to free up my time to work on Opensearch website • Make the connection better • Add SWORD deposit tool to Blackboard

  13. Do Research and Teaching mix? • Leeds Met front page directs you to search the Research or the Teaching Objects • Is this suitable at Keele?
