  1. Objective • TSW identify and support a point of view on individuals, issues, and events related to Mexico becoming an independent nation by participating in a gallery walk. • Homework – finish incomplete work

  2. Warm-up • In local schools, students have been required to wear IDs that have a GPS chip in them. This way the school always knows where the student is during the instructional day. Do you agree with students wearing IDs with instructional chips.? • Below the line on the white board, write you first name to show your point of view.

  3. Mexican Independence

  4. Mexican Independence • September 16, 1810 – August 24, 1821 • Series of revolts throughout Spain and Mexico • Economic slowdown and famine in 1810 • Criollo – a person born in the New World to Spanish-born parents • Mestizo - a person born in the New World with one Spanish-born and one Indian parent

  5. Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla • Known as “father of Mexican Independence • Priest who led Mexican War of Independence • Hidalgo was later captured and, after being degraded from the priesthood, was shot and killed

  6. Cry of Dolores • The Grito de Dolores ("Cry of/from Dolores") was the battle cry of the Mexican War of Independence, on September 16, 1810 • “My Children, a new dispensation comes to us today…Will you free yourselves? Will you recover the lands stolen 300 years ago from your forefathers by the hated Spaniards? We must act at once.”

  7. José Gutiérrez de Lara • Mexican Revolutionary and diplomat • Solicited aid from the United States • Convinced American Indians to join fight.

  8. Activity • You will be given a Mexican Independence Point of View Handout • On the wall are Individual and Event Cards of Mexican Independence. • You will complete a Gallery Walk of the Information Cards. As you read the cards, answer the questions on the handout. • After you are done, you will return to your seat and we will discuss as class.

  9. Reflection • What effect did the mestizo population have on the Mexican War of Independence? • How would the outcome of the war be different if the mestizo and criollos did not work together?
