What is a Brony? • Bronies (bro-ponies) is a term coined to denote men between 18 and 30 who enjoy and partake in the fandom of Lauren Faust’s reboot of My Little Pony, titled My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. • From the fact that this term exists in the first place we can infer not only that Bronies exist, but are commonplace to the extent that coining a word to describe them was apparently entirely necessary. Broniesare so numerous, in fact, that ‘Bronycon’ has been formed; an entire convention dedicated to said fandom. • Bronieshave become an online community too big to be ignored. Stephen Colbert gave a shout out to his bronies last fall on his show. Even Fox News attended January’s Bronycon to learn more about the phenomenon.
Why do People Become Bronies? • Some psychologists believe that broniesare a reaction to the U.S. having been engrossed in terrorism for the past ten years, living on the edge the same way previous generation lived through the Cold War. They believe bronies are tired of being afraid, tired of angst and animosity. They want to go somewhere a lot more pleasant.
Why do People Become Bronies? • Others attribute this phenomenon to different reasons: • Broniesare gay • Bronieshave submissive fantasies • Bronieshave womb envy • Broniesare experiencing a form of regression
“Joining the herd” • people become curious as to why others are watching • friends will introduce something they enjoy to their friends • people feel more pressure to fit in, and continue to watch the show • eventually it is like communism... YOU CAN NEVER LEAVE!
