Presentation Overview • Product Overview • Designers • Quick Timeline • Technology Overview • Inputs/Outputs • Parts Breakdown • Basic Operations • Evolution • Environmental Impact • Marketplace
Kinect Overview • Primary Function - A motion and sound sensing device that is paired with the Microsoft Xbox 360 gaming console. • Input Device • Allows users to interact with the console without a controller • Looks a lot like a normal webcam, but larger • Dimensions: • Head: 11" x 2.5" x 1.5" (w x d x h) • Base: 3" x 3" x 1.5" (w x d x h)
Designers • Designed by Microsoft Game Studios, owned by Microsoft, Inc. • Software designed by Rare • Camera designed by PrimeSense
Quick Timeline • Xbox 360 released November 2005 • Predecessor was the original Xbox • Kinect is released November 2010 • 10 million units sold by March 2011 • Released for Windows February 1, 2012
Kinect Technologies • Voice Recognition • 4 microphones • Recognizes each players voice separately from the background • RGB Camera • Facial recognition by detection of 3 colors, Red, Green, Blue • 640x480 Pixels @ 30Hz (30 Frames per second) • 3D depth sensors • Called Light Coding • Tracks movements of objects and individuals in 3 dimensions • Made possible by 2 sensors – including an Infrared depth-finding camera • Kinect Software • Enables gesture, face, and voice recognition • The “brains” of the device • Motorized Tilt • Allows the sensor to be tilted to change the viewing area • Requires an AC power adaptor (uses more power than USB adaptor to Xbox can provide)
Kinect: Functional Block Diagram • Input • Power • Color Video • Depth Perception Video • Infrared Video • Player Movement • Voice Commands • Involved Mechanisms • Translate video images to an on- screen picture you can see • Processes 3D information for gaming • Separates background noise from player voices and translates players voices to commands that the Xbox understands • Output (To Xbox 360) • On screen player movement • Audio • Heat
Basic Operation • 4 microphones pick up audio • RGB camera picks up video • Depth cameras pick up 3D images • This data is compiled by the software: • Voice recognition • Face and movement recognition • This data is then sent to the Xbox 360 (and now a computer running Windows)
Basic Operation cont. • When you turn the kinect on, the sensor scans the play area and detects all objects in the playing zone. • The software places 48 points on each player’s body to track their movement, and translates this to make the image you see on screen. • The software also allows the kinect to learn as you play • The more you play, the better the sensor can track your movement because it learns how each player moves naturally, so the on screen picture portrays each3. How is the product designed?
Evolution • Kinect was a first generation device • Kinect 2? • Better Image Processing • Better Voice Processing • Emotion State Of Players • All Speculation
Environment Impacts • Develop safe and stainable products • Conserve, Reuse, Recycle • Low Energy Input • Microsoft's Overall Commitment
Marketplace - Price • Cost to Microsoft • $56.00 for materials • not including assembly or transportation • Marketing budget was 500 million • Cost to Consumers • Around $149.99/$100.00 • Requires Xbox 360 to use most features, which may be an extra expense.
Marketplace – Who the product is for • Xbox 360 primarily marketed to boys and teenagers • Kinect marketed to everyone • Vast majority of Kinect games are designed for all ages. • Not just for games
Marketplace - Competitors Nintendo Wii • Uses motion of a controller instead of video of whole body • No cameras, just a sensor bar • Has the same market • Whole system is only $149.99 compared to 299.99 Sony Playstation Move • An add-on like the Kinect • uses one camera to track a ball on one controller • Like the Wii, but more accurate • bundle priced at $349.00, while individual coast is $99.99
