Ultrasound • Ultrasound: A medical device that uses ultrasonic sound waves in observing a baby during development • Ultrasound was discovered in Glasgow, Scotland in 1956 by Ian Donald and Tom Brown. It was used to detect industrial flaws in ships • Ultrasound was being used in Glasgow hospitals by the end of the 1950s • It wasn’t until the 1970s however, that it started being used in British and American hospitals. • Bats use ultrasound for navigation and to hunt their prey. • Dogs can hear ultrasound
Ultrasounds can detect all kinds of problems with the baby • Some physical birth defects that it can detect are… • Heart defects • Kidney problems • Absence of a limb • Cleft palate • Spina bifida
Advantages of Ultrasound • Real time, so that you can see what is going on exactly as its happening • Free of radiation • Free of harmful side affects • Minimal discomfort
Disadvantages of Ultrasound • Ultrasound shows the gender of the baby making it easier to get a gender selective abortion • Heavily operator dependant meaning that if the person running the ultrasound misses something or sees something wrong, they will feed that false information to the mother
Amniocentesis • Amniocentesis: A medical procedure used in prenatal diagnosis of chromosomal abnormalities and fetal infections, and also used for sex determination . The process involves taking a sample of amniotic fluid from the amniotic sac. The sample will contain tissue from the developing fetus. The DNA is then tested for any genetic abnormalities. It is mainly used to check if the baby has chromosomal abnormalities such as down syndrome.
History of Amniocentesis • Before that in 1956 in Germany, they could determine the sex of the baby. • Amniocentesis was successfully preformed in 1961, in Auckland, New Zealand. The doctors could successfully determine the gender of the baby and determine any genetic disorders
Advantages • It can be preformed by hand instead of using a machine to retrieve the sample • Identifies genetic disorders such as Huntington’s disease, cystic disease, tay-sachsdisease, and sickle cell disease • Can determine gender of child • The test results are 99% accurate
Disadvantages • There is a slight chance that the test can lead to a miscarriage • Small risk of uterine infection in days following procedure • It can determine any genetic disorders as well as the gender of the baby which can lead to the mother having an abortion
