  3. Water Lilies Claude Monet (CLAWD maw NEH) was born in Paris, France. Even as a young teenager it became apparent that he had artistic ability. He would draw caricatures of his teachers on his schoolwork.

  4. Monet had a small houseboat made. He would go out in the houseboat and paint scenes he saw from that view. He enjoyed painting outdoors observing how the light would change as the day progressed. He painted some scenes over and over again, and each would be different from the others because it was painted at a different time of day when the sun was at a different position in the sky.   7. Dear At Sunset Albert Bierstadt (BEER stat) was born in Prussia, which was a large German state. (This land today is in Germany, Poland, and Russia.) He came to America with his parents when he was two years old. He grew up in New Bedford, Massachusetts.

  8. Sunset Over a Mountain Lake In 1859 the artist made a trip to the Colorado and Wyoming territories with Frederick Lander, who was in charge of a government survey expedition. He was inspired to paint this beautiful scene of the Rocky Mountains. Indians are encamped in the valley.

  11. The Reader Jean-Honore Fragonard (frahgaw NAHR) was a French artist who lived in the 1700's. When he was 13 years old his father wanted him to become a clerk, but his heart was not in it. He wanted to paint.

  12. Chardin set him to copying the prints of masterpieces, but he didn't progress, so Chardin also dismissed him. Fragonard visited the churches in Paris day after day and returned to his room to paint them from memory. When he returned to Boucher six months later the master was astounded at the progress he had made and took him as a pupil. He put him to work drawing "cartoons", pictures which would be made into tapestries.

  13. Upon returning to Paris he was approached by Baron de Saint-Julien to paint The Swing. The trees are prominent in the picture. He was in demand as people craved the new themes he was painting. Fragonard opted to paint the frivilous themes people wanted to buy and became rich.
