Pretest • What do birds need to survive and reproduce? • food, water, shelter, space • water, shelter, mate, space • shelter, water, food, mate • mate, water, food, space
Pretest • Why is it helpful to migratory birds to turn off our lights at night? • To ensure they don’t get electrocuted. • It hurts their eyes and they could get a headache • Birds migrate at night and the lights distract them, so it could cause them to fly into buildings • They hate bright lights and could be lead off course by flying in the other direction
Pretest • What is one way to improve habitats for birds? • By increasing number of predators • By cutting down trees • By taking away water sources • By planting native plants
Pretest • Which of the following should be removed from migratory paths? • Windmills • Lakes • Skyscrapers • factories
What Birds Need To Reproduce! In order to reproduce birds need to: Find and then defend a territory, Then find a mate, Then build a nest and lay eggs, Incubate the eggs, Then feed and raise nestlings. After all that hard work the nestlings will fledge.
What Birds Need To Survive! In order to survive birds need: Water, Space, Food, and Shelter
Migratory Birds • Bright lights play a big role in confusing birds on their migrating routes. They can get distracted and fly into buildings or bridges What can we do to help? • We can turn off our lights at night. • Birds also die from eating foods with pesticides. What can people do to prevent death? • Don’t use pesticides on your lawn. (this helps many other animals as well) • Birds also die because they are eaten by predators, such as cats. • Only let cats outside for a monitored amount of time. • Other ways to help: • Clean up polluted or littered habitats, and/or plant a bird habitat How can we help? How can we help? How can we help? How can we help?
3 Ways to Improve Habitats for Birds • Reduce predators—keep cats indoors and eliminate outdoor sources of food which attract rats, opossums, skunks, foxes, and jays. These are all nest predators that will eat bird eggs and babies. • Plant native plants around so that birds have a place to build their nests. • Create water sources if there aren’t any nearby.
Nesting Birds • Nests protect bird eggs and young. • Bird nests are usually made of things like sticks, leaves, moss, vines, feathers, spider webs, and some human-made materials like string or scraps. • Some challenges that nesting birds face are bad weather, habitat destruction, and predators. • Positive things that could happen to nesting birds are that they have lots of food, nest boxes, and a protected habitat.
Conservation For Birds (non-habitat) • By not polluting the air with toxics that can kill the birds. • 2. By not putting windmills in their migrating paths where they migrate.
