Mission Statement • We believe in creating a safe, secure, and caring learning environment that enhances student learning physically, mentally, and emotionally in order to motivate students to live healthy and active lifestyles.
Curriculum Standards Based on TEKS • Social Development: The student is able to demonstrate ways to work in a team/group or individually, in order to build self esteem and social skills to be successful in physical activity to better themselves. • Applies rules, procedures, and etiquette during team or individual situations. • Applies personal skills and set realistic goals for improvement. • Responds to challenges, successes and failures during physical activities in a socially appropriate manner. • Accepts successes and performance limitations of self and others, exhibits appropriate behavior/responses and recognizes that improvement is possible with practice.
Curriculum Standards Based on TEKS • Physical Activity and Health: The student exhibits a physically active lifestyle that improves health and provides opportunities for enjoyment and challenge. • Student will participate in a variety of activities that develop agility, balance, coordination, power, reaction time, and speed. • Student will learn that physical activity is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle and should be done at least 60 minutes a day. • Students will participate in individual and team sports for challenge and enjoyment. • Students will learn the risks and safety factors for individual and team sports.
Curriculum Standards Based on TEKS • Movement: While participating in physical activity the student applies physiological and biomechanical principles to improve and develop motor skills. • Students will participate in team sports and group activities to achieve a desired goal. • Students will demonstrate their knowledge of badminton, using techniques such as forehand, backhand, and serving. • Students will apply the skills of individual and team sports in order to be successful while playing in a game. • Students will set specific goals during each activity and figure out ways to improve each of them.
Parent/Guardian Informative Letter Dear Parents, As the beginning of a new school year approaches, we welcome you and your child to our PE program! We will be spending 50 minutes per day with your child, working on the development of motor skills and motivation in your child to lead a physically active lifestyle. Your child will be required to be dressed for activity which includes athletic clothing (no jeans), tennis shoes, and no jewelry. You can help by becoming partners with us in your child's physical education. You are an important part of your child’s well being and attitude. A vital link exists between learning in school and learning in the home. We need to work together to help your child grow personally and professionally. We desire to hear about you and your child's opinion on our program, the positive as well as negative. It is helpful to hear about activities and experiences your child enjoys as well as suggestions on how to adapt our program for the betterment of our students. Please let us know about any changes in your child's behavior or attitude toward school and PE. We desire to monitor the development of all our students. We are looking forward to working with you and your child this semester. Students learn the history of sports and practice skills through activities and assignments emphasizing personal goals and improvement as well as cooperative partnering and group work.

Grading Policy • Participation/Attendance……………...10% • -Students are required to dress out and participate each class day • 1. A complete change of athletic clothing must be worn, including t-shirt or sweatshirt, shorts or sweatpants, socks and tennis shoes. No jeans! • 2. Tennis shoes should be tied before class and remain tied during the class period. • 3. No jewelry should be worn during class since it can pose a safety hazard. • -Students are required to be in class every day • 1.) A note from a parent is required to excuse a student due to injury or illness. It will be accepted for a maximum of three consecutive days. To be excused longer than three days, a doctor’s note is required. • 2.) Any student with an excused absence from school or excuse from class participation will be required to make-up and work or activity that was missed.
Grading Policy Major Project…………………………..20% -Students will construct a 2 week workout program for badminton. This project will include the following: • A brief history of the sport • An explanation of motions performed in the sport or position • What muscles are utilized from the motions in sport • What kind of muscular training plan would be appropriate considering the nature of the movements: strength & power, endurance, explosiveness, etc. Remember you are only doing a two week program. Based on the sport your focus may be on any of the above(strength, power, endurance, etc, etc). You choose, but you must specify. Specify if the program is in- season, pre-season, off-season, etc. Specify what type of athlete you have: beginner, intermediate, advanced. • A 2 week lifting plan for this athlete! Use a chart to set this up. • A list of exercises, along with amount or percentage of weight lifted, # of sets, and # of reps, recovery time between sets, etc., for each muscle group, with any instructions necessary for the specific athlete: • A list and description of all stretches for each body part, with any instructions necessary for the specific athlete. Be through your warm up and cool down can be here too. Include the exercise(the stretch), the # of sets, # of reps, recovery between sets, how long the stretch is held, etc. Use a chart to set this up. • Will be presented to class and teacher upon completion.
Grading Policy • Task Sheets…………………………………15% -Students will be required to complete task sheets for peer evaluation and self check as assigned in lessons. • Written/Skills Exam……………………….30% -There will be one written and skill exam for every unit that is covered during the course of the year. -A scantron will be provided and attendance is mandatory on test days. • Journals…………………………………..….25% -Each week students will be given a question to reflect on the activity or skill. -Students will have 5 minutes of class time to complete the journal questions.
Unit of BadmintonIntroduction • TEKS: 116.52 (c) 1A; 4 A & B • Three weeks will be designated to the study and skill development in the sport of badminton because this activity suffices our stated standards of social development, physical activity and health, and movement. This unit covers: • History • Content analysis • Rules and safety considerations • Scoring • Shot, Clears, Drop shot, Smash, Serve, forehand, and backhand motions • Goal setting • Emotional and social maturation • Interdisciplinary techniques
Interdisciplinary Technique for Badminton • In order to demonstrate the value of understanding the relationship between two or more subject areas, students will have the opportunity to apply their knowledge in a different context, thus demonstrating their complete understanding of what they have learned. • Teacher can achieve this through infusing the teaching of the badminton strokes and the application of the mathematical concept of fractions. The teacher describes the backswing of the stroke as a fraction of a circle or determine the number of successful serves using fractions. • Before the learning experience, the two teachers share their content with each other and together create a new way to teach the targeted content.
Goals for Badminton Unit The Learner Will: • Describe the rules and safety factors of badminton. • Demonstrate the Shot, Clears, Drop shot, Smash, Serve, forehand, and backhand motions. • Apply all techniques learned in badminton in an authentic game situation. • Set 3 specific goals for skill improvement in badminton and practice to achieve those goals • Exhibit appropriate forms of emotions, such as sportsmanship and enthusiasm, during play or practice.

Block Plan for Badminton Unit • Day 5: • Game: Today the class will participate in their first game. The nets will be up and students will put together everything we have worked on thus far. The focus of today is to improve skill. Day 6: • Badminton Workout: Class will workout today with a Speed and Muscle Tone. Written exam passed back and reviewed. Day 7-9: • Building Skill Level: For these 3 days students will take all they have learned and begin to use it in play with multiple partners. Day 10-11: • Review of Skills and Skills Testing: For these last 2 days before the tournament, students will review all they have learned and will complete a skills test. This is the final day to prepare before the tournament. Day 12-13: • Doubles Tournament: Class will have a winners bracket and a losers bracket. Every pair of athletes will play at least 5 games. Day 14-15: • Presentation of Badminton Projects Day 1: • Introduction of Badminton: Cover basic rules and regulations for the game. Class will volley the shuttle cock for the last 15 minutes of class for practice. Goal setting sheet and explanation of journal assignment. Day 2: • Introduction of Shot, Clears, Drop shot motions and volley the shuttlecock w/o the net: Students will divided up in partners and work on their volleying skill between the two of them. The teacher will instruct proper form as well as focus on eye hand coordination. Reciprocal Style Task Sheet. Day 3: • Introduction of Smash, Serve, forehand, and backhand and Badminton Workout. Class will work on Muscle Endurance and Agility. Inclusion style task sheet. Discuss Badminton Project and distribute rubric. Review – singles tactics, badminton court lines, badminton rules. Day 4: • Serves w/o nets and Exam: Today the class will learn how to serve correctly as well as the different types of serves and how to use them effectively. Practice Style and Self-Check Style Task Sheet. Exam covering rules and history.

Assessment/Grading PlanReciprocal Task Sheet (Peer Evaluation) Name ___________ Date____________ Task: Net Shots Students are to complete the tasks below and check off when each task is completed (each partner must fill out his/her own). Comments should be made regarding the success or enjoyment (or lack of) for each task. Students should be able to successfully play at least 15 out of the 20 shots before moving on to another task. This is the type of practice that students should participate in to increase their proficiency at any skill covered in the unit. Students are encouraged to use the practice time each day to practice these skills, and remember, DOCUMENT IT IN YOUR JOURNAL.
