  2. The need to coordinate collection and dissemination of statistics • Increased number of collectors at international level • More and more requests for data received by national statistical office • Duplication in dissemination and issues of citation and sourcing

  3. The need to coordinate collection and dissemination of statistics • Two goals of the Demographic Yearbook system: • Reduce the burden of replies placed on national statistical offices • Adapt the dissemination to better meet the needs at regional levels

  4. Coordinating data collection • Population estimates and vital statistics • Developing Joint questionnaire and launching it since 1999 – UNSD, Eurostat and Council of Europe • Two appendices • Regular annual coordination meetings • Positive reaction from countries • Room for improvement

  7. Coordinating data dissemination • Until now, Demographic Yearbook only at world level • Since 2002, regional issues are prepared • Cooperation with CARICOM • Cooperation with ESCAP

  8. The way ahead • Increase coordination at international level • Tracking and documenting duplication in data requests and dissemination and taking measures to avoid it • Regional dimension • Coordination also means additional efforts in processing, capturing and disseminating statistics

  9. Points for discussion • Other ways of enhancing coordination? • At the level of national agency, what are the major issues regarding data requests? And what are the needs of national agencies? • Regional reports: How useful are they? • Aside from UNSD, in the field of demographic statistics, are there any other UN-related entity requesting data?
