  1. Language Processing and Models Ms. Amany AlKhayat

  2. Liinguitic processing theories have been made within a framework of information processing In which stages of linguistic processing are made asseparate linguistic modules such as syntactic module, semantic module, semantic module and discourse module.

  3. So, Do these modules oprate separately or do they influence each other? • Would processing one module be influenced by ‘accessing simultaneously different kinds of knowledgestored in memory’ (Greene & Coulson 1995) • This would lead to the question: How humans process knowledge?

  4. Two main models • Linear Model: separate stages carried out one at a time. • Interactive model: processing involved in several modules can occur simultaneously, allowing different types of knowledge to interact. (linguistic and general knowledge)

  5. Linear Model • Each type of preocessin is completed before each next stage starts. Bottom up processing

  6. Interactive model • The various types of knowledge implicated in the processing modules are all available at the same time and can be brought in at any point to aid language understanding. • It is cognitively efficient • Takes into account all relevant information

  7. Methods of investigation • Online processing • Delayed processing
