  2. Emerging Technologies How Fast Can You Go? • Over the last 100 years the type of information that we can transmit electronically has not changed • Only the transmission speed has increased • The typical high-speed Internet connection is 300,000 times faster then Morse Code

  3. Emerging Technologies Today’s Common Technologies • Dial Up Connection – Uses existing telephone lines and modem (Speed: 56,000 bps) • T1 Lines – High-speed digital telecommunications line (Speed: 1,544,000 bps or 1.54 Mbps)

  4. Emerging Technologies Tomorrow’s Technology Today • Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) • Can provide connection speeds of 512 Kbps to 1.54 Mbps • Uses existing telephone system but employs new technology • COST: $49.95 per month ( 2 yr.) • Limited availability – future unclear

  5. Emerging Technologies Tomorrow’s Technology Today • Cable Modem – Uses existing cable TV system to deliver high speed Internet access • Connection speeds of 1.5 Mbps • COST: $40 per month • Becomes slow with too many users

  6. Emerging Technologies Tomorrow’s Technology Today • Wireless Computing – Wireless Local Area Networks (LANs) and Wireless modems are now available • Wireless LAN – Radio frequency-based (Speeds: 11 Mbps) • Cover only small local area

  7. Emerging Technologies Tomorrow’s Technology Today • Wireless modems – Radio or cellular (CDPD) frequency based • Coverage is limited (Speed 19.2 kbps – 28.8 kbps) • COST: $300 - $1000 for modem card and $45 per month • Some are going out of business
