Asian Trade Shows A USA Organizer’s Perspective
EJK China • EJK has been producing events in China for over twenty years. • In 2006 EJK China will produce 5 events in the construction, pulp and paper, petroleum and petrochemicals, energy and water industries. • In 2006, EJK will partner with AEM and Hanley-Wood to produce CONEXPO Asia and World of Concrete Asia. • In 2007 EJK China will again produce PT EXPO COMM, the largest telecommunications event in Asia.
China • Exhibition Centers in China Uneven distribution. Major cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou do not have enough exhibition centers. Secondary cities have built larger and more modern facilities. New Beijing Exhibition Center scheduled to open in 2007. Information on crucial operational issues such as floor load and height restrictions is still sorely lacking for most facilities.
Current trade show climate in China • Confusing and overlapping trade shows. • Move toward “secondary” cities as exhibition space grows more limited and competition increases in larger cites, i.e., Dalian pop. 2 million, Tianjin pop. 5 million. • Tough competition for potential Chinese partners.
What does the future hold for US organizers? • Two price policy. Domestic vs. International, continues or abolished? • WTO admission should result in more openness for the exhibition industry. • Show license requirements eased or lifted. • Tough competition from international and Chinese organizers.
What EJK looks for in an event • We look for an industry sector growing in a particular country • An international show already known to Asia. • A company that wants a partner more than simply a local organizer

Japan • While other cities have grown in the number of international events, Tokyo still remains the most popular destination for international shows. • Tokyo Big Sight, the major exhibition center in Tokyo. • Osaka growing in popularity depending on the industry. Kyoto, traditional location for conferences.
Other Asian destinations • Singapore, Hong Kong and Macau are planning new exhibition centers and entertainment centers. • Macau and Singapore to compete to become the “Asian Las Vegas” • Could impact the exhibition industry in China and elsewhere in Asia.
