SKHS Requirements for Graduation • Coursework • 24 credits • Portfolio • Comprehensive Course Assessments • State Tests – PAARC or NECAP • NECAP - Must score 2 or greater (Math, Reading) • PAARC - To Be Determined
Comprehensive Course Assessments (CCAs) • Students submit 8 proficient CCAs • 2 math • 2 ELA • 2 science • 2 social studies • Performance Based part of the final exam • Proficiency = 3
Portfolio Requirements • 24 submissions –linked to 8 SLEs • 5 Formative reflections • One summative reflection • Exit Oral presentation
Portfolio requirements Students complete an assortment of assignments that link to the school’s 8 Student Learning Expectations (SLEs). Four academic: A1, A2, A3 and A4 Two civic: C5, C6 Two social: S7 and S8
Four Academic SLE’s SLE 1 • A1 Critical thinking and problem solving • 6 submissions SLE 2 • A2 Communicate effectively through reading, writing and speaking • 6 submissions and an exit presentation • List of 10 favorite books read during high school with reflective summary
SLE 3 • A3 is technology literacy • students submit 4 examples of work demonstrating proficiency in 4 different software applications SLE 4 • A4 is fine arts proficiency • Students are required to demonstrate proficiency in at least one of the three fine arts • visual, music, or theatre (dance)
Two civic • SLE 5 - C5 requires students to demonstrate an understanding of human rights and diversity • 1 submission from any course or • may choose a pre-approved self-generated project • SLE 6 - C6 requires students to demonstrate an understanding of political, environmental, social and economic issues affecting our world • 1 submission from any course or • may choose a pre-approved self-generated project • may use community service
Two Social • SLE 7 -S7 requires students to demonstrate an understanding of the connection between appropriate choices affecting their physical, social and emotional well-being • 1 submission from any course or • may choose a pre-approved self-generated project • SLE 8- S8 requires students to identify goals, set priorities and manage their academic progress • Create and manage their portfolio • Complete an ILP with school counselor • 2 recommendations
Student Support SK Series Classes • One per year (4 total) • Time to work on portfolio • Yearly checklists with benchmarks SK 101 introduction to life at SK and the portfolio process • Three Themes • Transition • Learning styles • Graduation requirements
Student Support SK 102 – portfolio – 8 submissions SK 103 – portfolio – 13 submissions SK 104 – complete portfolio Courses • Teachers assign portfolio tasks linked to the school’s 8 SLE’s • 1 per quarter (4 per year) Advisory • Advisors monitor student progress
Portfolio Submissions in SK 101 • SLE 3 –technology (1 of 4) • Short Research paper • Introduces MLA formatting • SLE 2 – book summaries • Submit 2 Reading Summaries • (2 of 10) • SLE 8 • School counselors introduce the digital Individual Learning Plan (ILP) using “Way to Go Rhode Island”
Richer Picture • Richer Picture • Web based portfolio system • Allows access to student’s portfolio at home • Students will be introduced to the digital portfolio in SK 101 • Receive login ID and password • Begin process of learning how to use software • Upload two submissions
How do students submit work to the Portfolio on Richer Picture? • Student completes assignment for a class • Example: persuasive essay, A2 • Teacher grades the work • Proficient work with rubric (3 or 4) is uploaded to the Richer Picture Portfolio • Teachers assess work on Richer Picture • SK teacher verifies submission (checklist)
Communication between school and home • Parents can access a student’s portfolio on Richer Picture. • Information is sent out on the listserv • Information is on the school website • Parent nights (one per year)
