NEW YORK – Energy drinks have become a driving force behind a resurgence in the beverage market, according to market research publisher Packaged Facts. Sales of energy drinks — along with the performance of ready-to-drink (RTD) teas and sports drinks — have helped functional and natural RTD beverage market grow to $23 billion.

Shift to Value Brands • “Several shopper trends have converged to create this dichotomy,” said Thom Blischok, IRI president of consulting and innovation. “The most obvious trend is the move to trade down. Shoppers have moved away from their traditional brands to value brands, including both retailers’ private brands as well as economy brands from national brand manufacturers.”
