UWSC & Partners Focus on Education • Grade Level Reading campaign • Iowa Reading Corps • Trained AmeriCorps members tutor students • Partnering schools: Ballard East, Nevada Central & Sawyer
UWSC & Nevada Elementary Partnership • Summer programming is important to keep kids on track • Low income students lose on average 2 months or more in reading • By 5th grade they can be 3 grade equivalents behind • Summer is also harder for families to keep from going hungry • Knowing this, what can UWSC do to help?
UWSC Fills Gaps During Summer • Expand the 2013 Summer Food Program with partners in Nevada Increase from 16 to 28 days • Pilot a second site in Ames • Both sites will include Academic, Food Program and Enrichment • Organized by two AmeriCorps VISTA members hosted by UWSC • Supplemented with two more AmeriCorps VISTAs through VCSC • Funded by UWSC Endowment
