  4. What’s in it for the University? HESA metrics about HE staff qualifications Knowledgeable staff aware of their role in the university and sector

  5. What’s in it for me? A portable, well-established qualification A chance to think critically about key issues in HE and to learn about new developments in your field.

  6. Am I eligible? The PGCert in HE is open to: • Academic Staff • Professional Support Staff (PSS) • Colleagues working at the University’s library or cultural assets

  7. How is the PGCert structured? PGCert = 60 credits You choose from five 15-credits options Teaching, Learning and Assessment in the Higher Education Context (MO) The Local Academic Culture of Higher Education: a ‘practice research’ approach (MO) The Changing Landscape of Higher Education (SJ) Assessment and Feedback for Medical and Human Sciences (JW) Independent Higher Education Research Unit (SJ)

  8. Do I get APL? If you’re a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy – because you’ve successfully completed a New Academics Programme, for example – you’ll automatically receive 30 credits of APL (Accredited Prior Learning). That means you need only take two 15-credits units.

  9. How will the PGCert be taught? Some face-to-face sessions; Lots of on-line activity; Directed reading, watching, etc.

  10. Indicative Content: Learning Styles? “Understanding your learning style type, and the strengths and weaknesses inherent in that type, is a major step towards increasing your learning power and getting the most from your learning experiences.” Kolb (1999)

  14. What are the principles behind the PGCert’s assessment? assessment relates closely to your usual professional practices; you get to choose the topic and format that best suits your needs; collaborative assessment is encouraged.

  15. What will be expected of me? Find (or negotiate?) time to participate fully. Complete the programme within one year.

  16. What comes next? Masters in Higher Education? Your PGCert would be topped up with a 60-credit dissertation and four further taught units.

  17. How do I apply? Online form at www.manchester.ac.uk/pgcert-he 35 places available in 2014/15, increasing to 50-70 participants in subsequent years. Speak to your line manager first. The deadline for 2014/15 applications is 31 July 2014.
