Background information on the Bastille (when it was originally built, by whom, and for what reason) • The Bastille was made in the 14th century • The was Charles V • It was mainly built to guard a main entrance to Paris, but in the 18th century it served only as a prison for people who served short sentences.
What was the Bastille used for during the reign of Louis XVI? • This was used as a place of judicial detention in which the lieutenant de police could hold prisoners, under the regency of Philippe II, duc d'Orleans, persons being tried by the Parlement were also detained there.
How did the French people view it? • They viewed the Bastille as a symbol of the regime’s past abuses. • The symbolic meaning was a secondary motive for targeting it.
