Antebellum • This is the name that applies to the time BEFORE THE CIVIL WAR • Usually refers to the south, but can imply the entire period • SECTIONALISM: Belief that one should be more loyal to a particular region of the country, rather than the country as a whole. Also known as regionalism • A person may have said, for example “I am a Virginian”, rather than, “I am an American”
Antebellum Period • Known for: • The rise of sectional conflicts that reflected completing interests, primarily in economics and political interests • The growth of industry, both home and factories in the north • The rapid growth of slavery in the south • Territorial expansion • Many attempts by Congress (and some president’s) to COMPROMISE on the issues dividing the nation • The development of Western markets for Northern goods • Various Reform Movements aimed at societal ill or inequities
