  2. Takes the view that behaviour can be learned an explained by environmental influences • Individuals are controlled by associations and if these associations are differential this will result in criminal behaviour

  3. Behaviour is entirely dependent on situation as it is due to the differential associations • Can explain peaks in offending at adolescence as peers and gangs become more important influences than parents and more associations are made with them

  4. Cannot explain crime where individuals act alone or have no previous experience of criminal behaviour

  5. Case Study • Craig is 15 years old. He has been sentenced to 12 months in YOI due to repeated breaches of the conditions of his ASBO • This was received because of continued vandalism, drinking, public order and breach of the peace offences

  6. Craig grew up in Moss Side, Manchester. • He has a large family, and is the youngest of 5 siblings. 3 of his brothers have criminal records, as does his father. • His first offence was breaking into a car with his brothers. He spends lots of time with them, but also drinking on the streets with his friends.
