Takes the view that behaviour can be learned an explained by environmental influences • Individuals are controlled by associations and if these associations are differential this will result in criminal behaviour
Behaviour is entirely dependent on situation as it is due to the differential associations • Can explain peaks in offending at adolescence as peers and gangs become more important influences than parents and more associations are made with them
Cannot explain crime where individuals act alone or have no previous experience of criminal behaviour
