Warm Up: organize the strips of paper into the correct order. Wednesday, January 20th, 2014.
Notifications • Open note test Monday; notes must be handwritten; all material covered so far could be on the test. • Blog post is due Friday.
Objective • I will be able to identify dependent and independent variables as well as identify bias. Language Objective: • I will write using complete sentences that include punctuation.
Random Sampling • Each individual in the population of interest has an equal likelihood of selection • Create a numbered list of all members of the population and draw numbers out of a hat, or use a random number generating program, to get your sample. • This method is called simple random sampling and works if you are sampling from a relatively small population, such as all the students at a school or employees at an office.
Selecting Random Sample • Specify the population • Decide on the desired sample size. • List all the cases. • Make a decision rule (i.e. to select the cases with either the lowest or highest set of random numbers). • Assign a random number to each case. • Sort Cases (names) by random number.
Try It • What is an example of a random sample? A. selecting all the students that have a last name that begins with RB. selecting all the girlsC. putting all the names in a hat and selecting six studentsD. putting all the names in alphabetical order and selecting every fourth student
Bias • bias = unknown or unacknowledged error created during the design, measurement, sampling, procedure, or choice of problem studied • bias is so pervasive because we want to confirm our beliefs • science is organized around proving itself wrong not right • key difference between qualitative and quantitative research is • attempts to eliminate bias by quantitative researcher • explicit acknowledgement of bias by qualitative researchers
Identify the Bias • Gun Control • Do you agree or disagree with this statement: "There is a need for stricter gun laws." • Many people have said that there is a need for stricter laws on dangerous weapons. Do you agree? • Dealing with Violent Crime • Should we reduce violent crime by getting guns off the streets, or should we just lock people up longer? • What, in your view, is the best way to reduce violent crime in the U.S.: a) reduce the number of guns sold in the U.S. b) increase penalties for violent criminals
Classwork • Dependent/Independent Variables • Random Sample & Bias Practice Meet in Lab 701 tomorrow. Test Monday! Open Notes
