One High School’s Approach: Follow the Numbers Where does the data come from: • MAP (three times a year) • PSAT scores 8- 11 (PSAT/NMSQT given in the Fall of junior year to ALL students) • SAT scores • Grades from classes (be careful here as I am finding that grades are not always a good indicator of a student’s ability)

Data Driven SIP • Homework Survey (Freshmen, 10-12) • Discussion with seniors/freshmen drove survey questions • Surveyed Freshmen separately • Feedback used to springboard discussion • Four Year Plans (4 Year Plan) • ALL students need one (will do in spring of 8th grade) • Tweak the remainder of the years • Transcript checks every year, not just senior year • Career Pathways • Every area needs a pathway completed • Education • Advisory Periods Crucial • Curriculum changes in specific classes
Data Driven SIP • All students and teachers have College Board Accounts • Data teams • Not departmental only • Instructional Coach at all levels • Tailor it to fit your school not a blanket definition • For example: Fieldcrest Middle School is more about RTI, where as FHS is more about data collection and initial trends, curriculum impacts, etc. • Don’t reinvent the wheel • Just because you don’t have to do school improvement; don’t become complacent • Communicate with school community • Social media, newsletters, newspapers, phone calls, letters home
