The Incidence of t he Pathologies Associated with Spina Bifida

This study examines the incidence of various orthopaedic, neurological, and spinal disorders in children with spina bifida, including hip disorders, foot deformities, scoliosis, knee joint disorders, kyphosis, osteomyelitis, and sacral agenesis. The findings highlight the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in the treatment of spina bifida patients.

Purpose • Skeletaldeformitiesmayaccompany spina bifida (SB) as well as spinal and neurologicalpathologies. • Dueto the improvement in the patientcareservices and in the surgical procedures, there is a higher rate of survival in SB. • Thus, orthopaedic and spinal disorders areencounteredmorefrequentlyanymore. • Inourstudy, weaimtoevaluate the accompanyinganomalies in the children with SB.

Methods • Three hundred and fiftyfive (191 girls and 164 boys) of the 481 patientswhoadmittedtoouroutpatientclinicsbetween 2005 and 2012 and whosemedicalrecordscould be reachedwereincluded in thisstudy. • The meanagewas 12.8 (range 1-42) years. • The patientswereevaluated in terms of accompanying orthopaedic, neurological and spinal disorders.

Results • The incidence of hip disorders wasfound. • 32.1% (114 patients) • The incidence of footdeformitieswas53.2% (189 patients). • Pes equinovarus • Vertical talus • Pes cavus • The incidence of the deformitiesassociated with the kneejoint • 11.5% (41 patients) • The incidence of scoliosis • 19.4% (69 patients) • The incidence of lumbarkyphosis • 8.7% (31 patients) • Incidenceof sacralagenesis • 3.4 % (12 patients) • A ventriculo-peritonealshuntwasapplied • 20% (71 patients) • Undergoneneurosurgicaloperationsbefore • 18.6% (66 patients)

Discussion • Spina bifida is a complexcongenitalanomaliathatrequiresmultidisciplinaryapproach and in which orthopaedic, neurological and genitourinaryanomaliesmayaccompany. • Inourstudy, wehaveobservedfootdeformities (53.2%) the most. Hipproblems (32.1%), scoliosis (19.4%), kneejoint disorders (11.5%), kyphosis (8.7%), osteomyelitis (4.2%) and sacralagenesis (3.4%) followed it. • Detaileddescription of the accompanying orthopaedic anomalies and multidisciplinaryapproachmay be useful in the treatment of the patients with SB.
