  2. Homesickness • Each student is different and can handle different tolerances of change • Some students may feel great the first weeks of school and may start to feel homesick after the newness of school has worn off • People long for what is familiar and that can take awhile to adjust to new surroundings. SO… How can we best encourage new and returning students?

  3. How Can We Help?? • Encourage students to make their room feel like their room at home. • Be open to talking to new students and listening to what they are experiencing. Just being a good listener can help more than you think. • Foster a community where students can try new things, but also allowing them to be independent will create feelings of confidence and build self-esteem • Talk with student about joining an RSO; look at the website with them and attend a meeting with them • Volunteer and become active in the Charleston and EIU community

  4. Residence Hall Program Ideas • “Family” dinners once a week with your floor • Visit the Rec center as a floor and try a new fitness class together • Have a door decorating night and encourage residents to use pictures and elements from home • Movie night with other floors in your building

  5. Roommate Conflicts Tips to give your residents… • It is vital to have open and honest communication with your roommate • Know that is it okay to speak up and your thoughts and feelings are important • Understand that there are some things you may not agree on, but compromise is key

  6. Roommate Conflicts Cont. Tips for handling conflict… • It is important to listen to both sides individually and then listen to them together • Enforce the Roommate Contract if conflict arises • Be aware of behavior changes of either person and take personal notes if they come and talk to you • Be willing to mediate a meeting with the two of them together and each roommate separately

  7. Residence Hall Program Ideas • Create a game show where they must answer questions about each other • Host a seminar for your floor on how to create personal space and boundaries • Have the counseling center come in and talk about healthy communication and relationships
