“Maryland”-Motion Offense • Offensive Rules • Player with the ball: if you’re uncovered, get covered (attack the goal/defender). Once you’re covered, move the ball. • If you’re standing next to the ball, leave—create space. • The ball always has a left and a right option=“pop outs” to either side.
“Maryland”-Motion Offense • Formation: 3x2x2—players at 1, Y, 2, O, E, 3, and 4 • Set up outside the 12m fan with 10-15 yards between players • Keys to a Settled Attack • Balance/Spacing: Keep the set balanced, allow the ball space, back up shots; do not undercut someone going to goal--constantly exchange, rotate, and replace • Ball Movement: make the defense shift; 2 to 3 shifts=a quality shot • Understanding/Awareness (of others): movement with purpose; thinking 2 and 3 passes/moves ahead • Communication: tell your teammate what you’re doing • Utilize individual strengths and work as a unit
“Maryland”-Motion Offense • At first, call out what you want to have happen; for example, “pass and cut through/screen opposite.” After the team becomes proficient, most of the techniques will happen on the fly. • Coaching Progression: Most of our offensive calls and techniques are in this set. Establish the basic structure, introduce one technique, become proficient at that, and then move onto the next technique. • Teach on ball offense • Teach off ball offense • Work with 5v5 then 7v7
“Maryland”-Cut Through/Screen Opposite • Formation: 3x2x2—players at 1, Y, 2, O, E, 3, and 4 • Set up outside the 12m fan with 10-15 yards between players • Keep the set balanced—constantly exchange, rotate, and replace • Next slide: • X6 attacks; X5 and X7 are next to ball, so they cut through/screen opposite; X3 and X4 “pop out”; X1 and X2 cut and replace to maintain balance
Maryland- “Cut Through/Screen Opposite” X6 X7 X5 X3 X4 X1 X2
“Maryland”-Cut Through/Screen Oppositeafter the “Pop Out” Pass • X4 catches in triple threat and attacks immediately. • X1 and X6 (passer) are the 1st players to either side of the ball, so they cut through and screen opposite. • X7 and X3 are the next players to either side, so they “pop out.” • If either one of them receives the ball , she immediately attacks, triple threat • Pop outs always have the option to go “back door” if their cut is overplayed. • X5 and X2 maintain balance and “exchange”
