  2. Many people participate in a physical activity to maintain their health and to improve their fitness. • Give an appropriate definition for each of these terms. (2) • Give two reasons why it is possible that a person may be considered fit but not healthy. (4)

  3. Mark Scheme a) Health – a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Fitness – the ability to cope with the demands made during an individual’s day-to-day life. b) Several other factors involved in being ‘healthy’ including nutrition, living conditions, genetic background, illness, age, mental state, social happiness etc. Physical fitness is just one component of health.

  4. Power may be considered to be a major fitness component required by gymnasts. • What do you understand by the term ‘power’? (2) • Name and describe two other fitness components that you consider to be important for gymnastics. (4)

  5. Mark Scheme a) Power is the rapid application of muscular force. Strength and speed combined. b) Any appropriate skill related or health related fitness component with suitable definition. Most appropriate components for gymnastics include: strength, flexibility, agility, balance, coordination.

  6. A defender in a team game has to sprint for the ball, stop and then change direction to mark an attacker. The attacker moves towards goal and the defender has to stretch to win the ball. Define three components of skill-related fitness that have been used in this period of play and state when they were used. (6)

  7. Mark Scheme • Speed is the rate at which the body is moved from one place to another. Used when defender sprints for ball. • Flexibility is the range of movement around a joint. Used when defender stretches to win ball. • Agility is the ability to change direction at speed. Used when defender has to change direction to mark attacker.

  8. The choices we make about our lifestyle can have negative effects upon our health and fitness. • State three lifestyle choices that can have an effect upon health and fitness. (3) • Choose one of the answers given in part (a) and discuss how you could help somebody else change their lifestyle. (3)

  9. Mark Scheme • Diet, exercise, alcohol, smoking. • Answer differs depending on choice from part (a). Answer must include 3 points and is likely to cover aspects such as: • Inform them of the health dangers associated with their current lifestyle choice. • Inform them of the benefits that can be gained through a change in lifestyle. • Help to devise a suitable plan of exactly how the individual can change their lifestyle. • Help with goal setting. • Any other appropriate answers.
