Benefits of Exercise • The benefits of exercise can be grouped into four major categories • Physical • Lose weight, build muscle, tone the body, improve flexibility, improve endurance, etc. • Social • Make new friends and interact with other people • Mental • Relieve stress and tension, improve self-esteem, build confidence • Aesthetic • People like how they look when they exercise and stay healthy and fit
What Are Some Items That Contribute to Good Health? • Proper nutrition • Adequate sleep and rest • Exercise • Avoiding alcohol, tobacco, and drugs • Knowing how to deal with stress • Maintaining your self-esteem and confidence • Family and friends • Remaining disease free
What is Physical Fitness? • Being physically fit means a person can do all of the things they want and need to do without feeling tired or strained • The two categories of fitness • General fitness • Specific fitness
What is Health? • Health is the overall and complete state of well-being • Physical health • Social health • Mental health • It is not just the absence of disease or not being sick
What is General Fitness? • Also known as health-related fitness • Required by everyone • It is needed to cope with the demands placed on people on a daily basis • It requires that people still have be able to meet any additional demands that might be placed on their bodies
What Are the Components of General Fitness? • Muscular Strength • Ability of a muscle to exert great force • Muscular Endurance • Ability to use muscles for a long time without having to stop • Cardiovascular Fitness • Having a strong heart and circulatory system • Stamina • Ability to keep doing something for a long time without having to stop • Flexibility • Ability to twist, bend, and stretch comfortably
What is Specific Fitness? • The part of fitness that allows people to perform specific skills with ease • Balance • Ability to control the body’s position • Power • Amount of force a muscle can exert • Agility • Ability to change direction and speed quickly and efficiently • Coordination • Combination of body movements that result in the desired movements • Reaction time • The time that elapses between a stimulus • and a person’s response to it • Speed • How quickly a person can do something
