Destiny and the Library

1. Destiny and the Library Objectives: To use the library in conjunction with the “Elementary School Online Catalog” or “Destiny Software” in support of curriculum needs through the creation of a personal account in “Destiny”

2. This Power Point is designed for Elementary School Teachers and Middle School Teachers. • And must be used with the Elementary Online Catalog (Destiny Software). • When complete one Technology credit will be awarded.

3. There are five tasks to complete: “Create an Account,” “Access your Library Account,” “Search our Library,” “Make a List of Library Materials,” “Search for Online Resources,” and “Make a list of Online Resources.” Tip: The colors of the slide titles and their tasks match

4. What is Destiny? • It is the database that allows us to locate all the materials in the library. • It can be accessed: • From the desktop of the computers in the library by clicking on this icon. • From the Elementary School Library Page by clicking on: “ES Library Online Catalog”

5. How do I create my own account in Destiny? • Ask Maria for your barcode. You can come to the library or send an email. • Open destiny and click on AsociaciónEscuelas Lincoln Elementary School . • click on “Create Account”

6. You are on the correct screen to create an account if you see the following Enter your information into the blue rectangles and click on next. Remember: Maria has your barcode.

7. After you click on “Next,” you are on the right screen if the page looks like this… And your name appears in the red rectangle.

8. Example ScreenLil Library has filled out the “Create Account” screen. All Lil needs to do is click “Save” and she has created her account.

9. Lil Library has successfully created an account. After clicking on save her name appears in the right corner of the screen.

Now you have an account… the question is: How can I use my Destiny Account? • You can access and view your library account to know what you have checked out. • You can search our library materials. • You can make lists of library materials. • You can search Destiny’s database for “online resources.” • You can make list of “online resources.”

11. You have “logged in!” You can view your account!! Susan Thornton is logged in… her name is in the right-hand corner. First click on “My info” and then “Patron Status” and the screen below appears. This screen details the library materials she has out.

12. Practice viewing your account • Check your patron status (slide 8) • Make a list of any 3 library materials you have checked out. • At the end of the power point you will be asked to email Susan a list of these 3 library materials. This work justifies your technology credit

14. How do I search the library materials on the “ES Online Catalog?” • Access the library webpage from Lincoln’s website. • www.lincoln.edu.ar … Elementary … Library • Click on “ES Library Online Catalog” located at left. • Choose AsociaciónEscuelas Lincoln Elementary School • Login

15. A Basic Search When you access the online catalog the “visual search” automatically appears. Visual search is searching by picture. Most adults want to change this to the “basic search.” You do this by clicking on the “Basic” tab. Once you have chosen the basic tab, the familiar type of search format will appear. It is the “basic search” situation. This makes available to the user a “find box.”

17. Conducting a Keyword Search After clicking on the keyword button, this screen should appear. This is the screen you can choose books from. The call number is located under the title of the book. • To learn more about a book click on “Details” Tip: The call number indicates the location of the book in the library

19. How do I make a list of library materials? Conduct a search: 1. Open the ES online catalog (slide 2) 2. Click on AsociaciónEscuelas Lincoln Elementary School (slide 3) 3. login (slide 4) 4. Begin your search (slide 13) On the screen showing library records, click the button “Add to this List.” The book or library materials you choose (by clicking this button) will then be kept on a list for your future reference. You have successfully added to your list when the button changes to “In this List.”

20. How do I check my list? To check your list you must be logged into Destiny with your username and password. Then, click on “Resource list” in the menu on the left. Also, “My Lists” must be clicked. And lastly, click on “View.” You should then see a screen similar to the one below.

21. Practice • Use the online catalog and your Destiny account and find a book you might use in your classroom from the following areas of the library nonfiction, fiction, and everybody. If you are an English teacher use the English collection and if you are a Spanish teacher use the Spanish collection. • Add it to your list. • At the end of the power point you will be asked to email Susan the titles of the three books you have in your resource list of “library material.” This work justifies your technology credit.

23. How do I search Destiny’s database for “online resources?” Log into Destiny Click on “Webpath Express” • Type keyword • Into find box. • Click on “Search” • And… next side

25. From this screen you keep a list of websites • Click on “Add to this List” • It will change to… • “In this List”

26. How do I check my website list? Your list of websites is kept in your “Resource List” as “Online Resources.” Click “Resource Lists,” “My Info” and “Online Resources.” There is one website in Susan Thornton’s list
