Who thinks the internet is a good thing? • Who has access to the internet at home? • Who has access to a smart phone? • Who uses internet banking? • Who has a social media account? • Does your children have access to social media? • When using these devices do you know how to keep safe? • If something negative happens do you know what to do?

FACT: 55% of children and young people said that they use the internet every day.* • FACT: Children (aged 8 - 15) in the UK who use the internet at home have high levels of belief in their ability to keep themselves safe online - only 2% say that they are not confident. • FACT: 22% of 12 - 15s say that they'd be happy to give out their email address online. • FACT: A further 30% would have some concerns, but would still give out their email address.** • FACT: 20% of parents of 8-12 year olds who have a profile on a social networking site say that either: • they are unaware that their child is on such a site • they don't check their child's activity on the site or • they don't know if they check** • Young people are on the internet everyday using social networks, finding out information for homework, chatting to friends, shopping or just browsing looking for something of interest.  While it's to be having fun on the internet, do you know how to keep yourself or your children safe online?

A QUARTER OF YOUNG PEOPLE SAY THE INTERNET WOULD BE THE FIRST SOURCE OF INFORMATION FOR ADVICE ON DRUGS, HEALTH, SEX, ALCOHOL & FINANCE Are you aware of what your children look at on line? 79% OF PARENTS SAY THEY TALK TO THEIR CHILDREN ABOUT ONLINE SAFETY, ONLY 52% OF CHILDREN AGREE Do children tell you what they look at on line? 33% OF CHILDREN SAID THEIR PARENTS HAD NO IDEA WHAT THEY LOOKED AT ONLINE

Instagram • Instagram is a way of sharing your life through a series of pictures • Take pictures on mobile phone • Shares photos on multiple platforms at once • If you are “public” anyone can subscribe to follow you • Privacy settings are available • All photos are by default visible to Instagram users • If you are private only people who follow you can see your photos

  15. What’s App • Mobile messaging app exchange messages, photo’s and video’s • FREE to send media • Images are stored on the site • Deleting an image will only remove it from your device it will remain with everyone you have sent it to. • Always use privacy settings

  16. Sexting • Increasingly common amongst young people • Sharing explicit or inappropriate images via mobile devices or web cams • Cybersex, nudie or a selfie • Often seen as flirting and felt that it is part of normal life • Reluctant to discuss • May be judged by parents • Phones confiscated

Its not harmless Its illegal Taking, receiving or sharing an image can have a long lasting negative impact By sending an explicit image, a young person is producing and distributing child abuse images and risks being prosecuted, even if the picture is taken and shared with their permission. It's easy to send a photo or message but the sender has no control about how it's passed on. What are the dangers of Sexting

They can be deleted on social media but images can still be saved or copied by others.   33. SMART S – safe, keep all your personal details safe, set strong passwords - Privacy settings (friends only) M – never meet someone you have met online unless you know who they are. A – avoid accepting emails, files, pictures etc from someone you don’t know. R – reliability, people you speak to online may not be who you think they are. T – tell someone if you have any issues online
