Towards a Disaster Risk Reduction Information Platform: An opportunity for collaboration Information group ISDR secretariat
Some notes from IATF-12 DRR is a huge task that needs cooperation and joint efforts at all levels (partnerships). Importance of knowledge and information sharing. Facilitate access to concrete and useful DRR measures on the ground (good practices). Provide information at the country and local level. Develop/use mechanisms for the implementation of the HFA. It is also on this basis, that we are proposing to develop a common information platform
To develop a “Disaster risk reduction information platform” or hub, building on existing disaster reduction information networks and partners participation to exchange data and information, and facilitate the compilation and systematic categorisation of information. This would serve as a tool to analyse, synthesize and disseminate good practices for DRR, according to users’ needs and in response to the HFA, in particular paragraph 33f. 1. Objectives (pages 3, 6)
2. Guiding principles (clearinghouse concept) p.9 Combination of existing information networks. Decentralised characteristic: facilitate nodes of information managed and maintained by partners. Open for broad participation: users, providers. Example of an information node 1. Own network • Easy and free of charge access. • User-oriented character to facilitate searching and retrieving of information. • Flexible and scalable mechanism to accommodate the expanding diversity and needs of users. 2. Own information system, quality control, Databases, etc. 3. Own information services
3. Some results of the users survey (p.7) ISDR website PreventionWeb Sections of ISDR website recently used
Partnership development Without partners participation and involvement the development of a global information platform is not possible. Establishment of an ad-hoc advisory group and agreements with partners willing to support this initiative. Application of guiding principles Concrete actions INFORMATION To complement inventory of information sources, networks. Database development (on-line). Continued identification and analysis of good practices classified by region, country, type of hazard and HFA priorities. Provision of information services. PREVENTIONWEB Prototype of user-oriented PreventionWeb. Common configuration and layout for regional information platforms. SPECIALISED LIBRARIES Establishment of a specialised library on disaster risk reduction in new premises. Elaboration and dissemination of field libraries on disaster risk reduction. 5. Next steps for implementation (p.15-18)
