Experiment #4 summary ATM 419/563 Spring 2019 Fovell
Part 1: Wind profiles for YSU At t =37 (overnight), t= 44 (early morning, 1 h after sunrise), and t = 49 (afternoon)
For your plot, the wind speeds will be for model levels 1-8 and normalized by wind speed at model level 1 (~ 27 m) instead 1200 local noon 0000 local midnight Slide 48 from PBL_Part1.pptx (not a WRF simulation) Normalized winds plotted against log height. Normalization by wind speed at 2 m. Less shear at 1200 local and more at 0000 local. We will utilize this information to predict winds near the surface
Largest shear overnight when most stable Least in afternoon, when PBL is well-mixed
Part 2: Comparing PBL schemes YSU, MYJ, MRF, QNSE, MYNN2
Our MYNN2 configuration had non-local (“EDMF” flag) mixing ON for scalars, OFF for momentum MYNN w/ EDMF MYNN w/o EDMF MYNN w/ EDMF (non-local) on helps make lapse rate more neutral
Our MYNN2 configuration had non-local (“EDMF” flag) mixing ON for scalars, OFF for momentum bl_mynn_edmf_mom = 1 vs. bl_mynn_edmf_mom = 0 MYNN w/ EDMF on momentum MYNN w/o EDMF on momentum
