The topics • Written assignment for SL is based on the ‘core’ topics. • Remember those are: • Communications and media • Global issues • Social relationships
Basic requirements • Your assignment is 300-400 words long. • It is preceded by a rationale of 150-200 words. • It is succeeded by a bibliography of source texts. • It is done in your final DP year. • It must be word-processed. • It counts for 20% of your final grade.
You may write one of these text types: • Article • Blog / diary entry • Brochure, leaflet, flyer • Essay • Interview • Introduction to debate, speech • News report • Official report • Review • Instructions, guidelines • Written correspondence
Source texts • You are responsible, together with your teacher, for finding 3-4 stimulus texts. • The texts (or extracts) are 300-400 words long. • They must be in the target language and relevant to the target-language culture. • You do not need to include them with the WA. • They must not be taken from your coursework.
Rationale • Describe the topic you’ve explored. • Explain the relevance of the source texts. • Explain your choice of text type. • State your aims. • Explain how you’ve achieved them.
Example assignment • You read an article about teenagers using Instagram for cyber bullying. • You read several posts on Instagram of students engaging in cyber bullying. • You watch a documentary on this topic. • You write a brochure for Teen Health and Safety, warning about cyber bullying, offering tips and help.
Criterion A: Rationale and task(10 marks) How well does the student use the rationale and the task in order to accomplish the assignment? • How clearly has the task been introduced? • How successfully does the task address the subject and aims stated in the rationale? • How appropriate is the choice of text type to the task?
Criterion C: Language(8 marks) Criterion B: Organization and development (6 marks) How appropriate and effectively does the student use language in relation to the task? How well are ideas organized and developed?
