Campus Cable TV UPDATE: Keep, Change, or Cut the Cord? Susan Brower Trey Herb Media Services Coordinator A/V Systems Manager Monroe Library Warrington College of Business Loyola University New Orleans University of Florida
What We’ll Do Today • What are campus options for getting TV? • Technologies, Companies, Costs • Trey: WCB’s choices: satellite and HD antenna • Susan: Loyola’s movement toward cutting the TV cord: Student Surveys
Campus TV OPTIONS • To RECEIVE Content: • Wire: Coax or fiber (from local CATV Company or Internet) - Pay for programming $$$ • Dish: DirecTV or Dish, direct or 3rd party - Pay for programming $$$ • Antenna (Digital) - FREE regional broadcast channels: https://www.fcc.gov/media/engineering/dtvmaps
Campus TV OPTIONS • DISTRIBUTE: • The Old Way: Wire: Coaxial Cable - Only TVs can receive signal • The NEW Ways: - Computer Network: LAN and WiFi Smart TVs, Computers, Phones, Tablets - HDBaseT
Companies: IP Distribution • Philo: Can take any programming feed or university can pay for DirecTV through them. http://philo.com • Apogee/Stream 2: DirecTV programming; includes Campus Life Channel. http://www.apogee.us/video/iptv/ (Campus Televideois owned by Apogee) • Conklin Intracom/Beehive: Can take any programming feed or we can pay for programming through them. http://oncampus.video/ • YOUR LOCAL CABLE COMPANY
Providing Television Content to the Warrington College of Business (WCB) Thomas (Trey) Herb University of Florida Warrington College of Business
The Dilemma • Central Campus Cable was going away. • Cruddy System • Did not affect students greatly at WCB • 4 Buildings were losing content
The Victims • Four Buildings had different needs • Bryan (Administration): Dean’s Office and 2 special purpose rooms • Sports • Hough (Graduate School): all common areas had TV and used it • Sports and Business • Stuzin (Departments, Centers, Offices): One Location, but Critical • Retail Research Center • They want it all • Heavener (Undergrad): New Building. Were not using what they had • Meh Nice to have
The Search • Looking for an IPTV provider for small scale commercial • Really want to leverage IP infrastructure • Sling, Hulu, Whatever do not provide commercial products • Apogee and other hotel/dorm providers were too expensive and complex (50K+) • Cable Company • Local (Cox) Company wanted 15K just to get the cable to one building • Would completely leverage existing COAX • Satellite • Reasonable monthly cost ($90+receivers) • Largely leverages existing coax • Additional infrastructure costs less that cable (<5K)
And the Winner is • Satellite (mostly) • Hough, Stuzin, Bryan all went with satellite • HD Antenna • Heavener went with broadcast • Cost for install too much (>10K) • Enough for emergencies • Leverages HDBaseT infrastructure
And the Loser is • Pitfalls and fun facts • Finding installer • Permissions for putting stuff on buildings • Finding contractor to install big COAX and Conduit • Up dating and programing existing control systems • Billing accounts. Each building has its own account • Great if the customer never realizes its happening
